Senija

Senijero/a - as the locals are officially known in the town of Senija - number around 650 and it's never really dropped hugely from this figure except for when the village was exclusively Moriscos (African Moors who had converted to Christianity) and they were expelled en-masse from Spain in 1609. Senija repopulated with Christian families. The majority of village work is from the growing of grapes for both wine, or drying for exportation. But Senija is very close to Benissa and many residents also travel there to work and to other nearby places. In 2005 40% of the village were from other European countries.

It has a few more industrial looking buildings peppered amongst the village but there is an old townhouse area, new townhouses and then an area separate from the main village where individual chalets nestle into a little hillside next to Senija. Apparently motorbikers like to come to the town on Sundays to sample the local home cooking - de casera - but I haven't had that delight to view. The town is quiet and tidy, about 234m above sealevel and 75kms from Alicante/airport. Valencia is a little further away and in the opposite direction. The main road through the town comes from Lliber and goes to Benissa. The town does not appear to have its own shield - unlike the rest of the villages of the Vall de Pop.
